Origin: Yerba mate, the world's leading producer, is a plant grown in Argentina, where it is the only place in the world where it is cultivated. Argentina, in addition to being the top consumer, is also the largest producer and exporter of yerba mate, holding 60% of the global market share. The yerba mate produced in Argentina has received the certificate of denomination of origin, which not only establishes a legal framework but also signifies the strong connection between quality and the specific geographical location of production. Mate, a popular infusion in South American countries like Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil, is made from yerba mate. The consumption of mate can be traced back to the Guarani natives, the indigenous people who resided in certain regions of South America. The Guarani either chewed mate leaves directly or prepared infusions in a gourd filled with water. Known for its ability to combat fatigue and enhance mood, yerba mate was also traditionally consumed for its therapeutic properties.
Today, Taragüi is the leading brand in Argentina, producing over 56,000 tons of yerba mate annually. Established in 1940, Taragüi yerba mate is cultivated, harvested, and processed by experienced professionals at Establecimiento Las Marías, situated on more than 30,000 hectares in the Argentine province of Corrientes. A family business founded in 1924, Las Marías ensures top-quality yerba mate and oversees all stages of production, from cultivation to distribution. Leveraging nearly a century of expertise in the market and a commitment to innovation, Las Marías continues to uphold standards of excellence in yerba mate production in the province of Corrientes, Argentina.
